The 2nd International Conference on EMI and AI, hosted by the College of Management, Asia University, Taiwan, has once again set the stage for groundbreaking discussions at the nexus of English Medium Instruction and Artificial Intelligence. The conference, distinguished by its in-depth exploration of AI's role in enhancing EMI teaching methodologies and cultural education, witnessed the convergence of over 20 paper presentations from faculty and students worldwide, including Taiwan, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, and the Philippines, among others. Experts and scholars who attended the meeting to give keynote speeches include Dr. Chester Hsieh from National Tsinghua University; Dr. Chandan Kumar from University of Illinois at Chicago, USA; Dr. Irma Savitri Sadikin and Dr. Ria Saraswati from Esa Unggul University, Indonesia; and Dr. Nivea Thomas K from Christ University, Bengaluru, India.
The College of Management of Asia University has been awarded the EMI promotion project grants from the Ministry of Education for three consecutive years. In her welcome speech, Dean of the College of Management, Dr. Chen Ming-Huei pointed out that the theme of this conference is "Building a Bridge of Language and Culture through Technology." She also highlighted that this conference marked a significant milestone in our ongoing journey to explore the intersection of language, culture, and technology in the realm of education. With the theme "Bridging Language and Culture through Technology," we aim to explore the synergies between EMI and AI by focusing on enhancing language and education through innovative technologies such as ChatGPT and open AI.
Dr. Chester Hsieh opened the keynote sessions with a compelling presentation on using large language models, such as ChatGPT and Bard, to enhance EMI teaching. He underscored the transformative potential of these AI tools in making language instruction more interactive, personalized, and effective, setting a high bar for the integration of AI in education.
Following Dr. Hsieh, Dr. Chandan Kumar delved into the prospects of AI integration in language education, identifying emerging trends and technologies. His analysis highlighted how AI could provide unprecedented access to language learning, breaking down barriers for learners worldwide and making the case for AI as a democratizing force in education.
Dr. Irma Savitri Sadikin offered insights into ChatGPT's impact on language prowess and academic achievement in EMI education. Her presentation emphasized the model's role in fostering academic excellence and cultural understanding, illustrating AI's capacity to support both educators and students in achieving higher levels of linguistic and cultural competence.
In the afternoon sessions, Dr. Nivea Thomas K's presentation on AI-assisted folklore education showcased how ChatGPT could be utilized in classroom learning to preserve and disseminate cultural heritage, making an essential case for AI in safeguarding intangible cultural knowledge.
Dr. Ria Saraswati explored the challenges and successes of translating Indonesian cultural terminologies using ChatGPT. Her work provided critical insights into the nuanced role of AI in cultural preservation and the importance of accuracy and sensitivity in AI translations, addressing a fundamental challenge in the global EMI context.
